8 Ways To Amp Up Your Self-Esteem!

Self-esteem is often defined as what a person assumes their own worth to be, and more often than not, we’re our own worst enemies. Almost everyone lacks self-esteem, even the people who appear to be the most confident. This arises from feeling like we have failed to achieve a certain standard, set either by society or ourselves and it’s a perpetual internal struggle. I, personally, see myself as someone with a low self-esteem, so I write this article in the hope that it’ll help all those who read it and maybe, just maybe, I’ll learn something too. So, here goes nothing!

    1. Stop criticizing yourself: We’re our own harshest critics, so give yourself some leeway to make mistakes. Everyone has some faults, learn to accept that. It’s the first step to happiness.
    1. Don’t compare yourself to others: Every person is unique, and everyone has their strengths. Don’t judge yourself by someone else yardstick. You have some qualities that others don’t, that they covet. Focus on that.
    1. Focus on the wins: It’s good to take time and celebrate your achievements, however small they may appear. One thing I learned from a wee little show called Glee is that, “From small things, big things one day come.”
    1. Exercise: Most of the self-esteem issues arise from being unsatisfied with our physical appearance and body language. This is something which can be improved through exercising regularly. Also, creating and sticking to an exercise regime gives you a sense of achievement, which can go a long way in making you feel better about yourself.
    1. Surround yourself with positive people: If the people that you regularly interact with are positive, you will stay positive. Don’t talk to people who spend their time criticizing people. It’ll convert you into a negative person, which is no good for anyone.
    1. Concentrate on the things within your control: We all have a habit of agonizing ourselves over things that we can’t quite control. Instead of worrying about them, focus on things that you CAN control. Learn to let go of what you don’t have any influence over.
    1. Do things you enjoy: Having hobbies is extremely important for having a healthy self-esteem. An empty mind is the devil’s workshop. When you’re alone and feeling vulnerable, that is when negative thoughts creep in. So instead of letting that happen, read a book, listen to music or work on something that interests you. Just don’t sit idle.
  1. Be kinder to others: When you’re kind to others and make someone else happy, you’ll feel good about yourself. You’ll feel like you are a good person and having a positive image of yourself is the main ingredient of increasing your self-esteem.

However, the most important step in inculcating a healthy self-esteem is accepting yourself as you are. The mistakes, the faults, everything bad is balanced out by the good in you. Only when you accept that will you be happy, and when you’re happy with yourself, it shows! You have to be your own hero. No one else can do that for you. So go ahead, and seize the day. Make it yours.
