Importance of Crying

2 Mins read

We all want to be happy. No one really wants to cry and feel vulnerable in front of the other. It is seen as a sign of weakness and helplessness.

You are a grown up now, stop crying!“, “Boys don’t cry“, “I don’t want anyone to know that I cried” and all examples of how such a natural phenomenon is perceived negatively. The moment we see someone crying we say “Stop cry!” We are all moved by the emotions of the other person but still want to control and stop it. Why? Because we do not know its important. Crying is the sign of life at birth as it helps inflating the folded lungs of the child to breath. From child birth to emotions expression to fulfilling the physiological needs, a cry is all it needs.

Crying is a form of communication for the child. Starting from a low and slow to gradually increasing volume is a hunger cry. A harsh, high pitched, non melodious cry is for pain. Next is a fussiness that is indicated by a mild, irregular cry. Since the child is unable to speak it expresses in the form of crying.

In biological terms, Crying helps remove toxins from the body and killing bacteria. It contains lysozyme which is an anti bacterial that fights against germs. Thus, keeping the eyes clean and healthy. They not only clear the eye but also enable us to see. There main function is to lubricate the eye which in turns prevent from dehydration, giving us sight.

On a emotional front it helps in elevating our mood and gives in a relaxed feel by lowering the individuals stress. The more we cry the more we express. With this comes a trust in this state of vulnerability where the person feels safe in the presence of other. It establishes the emotional bond and strengthens interpersonal relationship.

Crying is one of the most common phenomenon taken for granted. It heals us emotionally, physiologically as well as spiritually. Seen as a sign of weakness, crying actually helps get in touch with your true feeling. It helps in releasing the brain chemical such as endorphin and prolactin. These are a result of increased stress in the body. Hence the more you suppress them the more these stress giving chemicals will increase in the brain resulting into more stress.
Crying help us cleanse both physically and emotionally hence is the most powerful human tool which should be used effectively.
