Kalsi Expereinced the Pain of Unrequited Love and Is Now on the Road to Healing

20 year old Kalsi is currently pursuing her engineering degree from a highly reputed college within the country. As we speak with her, she sounds wise beyond her years and tells us about her share of ups and downs in life.

She has been battling anxiety for a really long time and it all started because of a devastating heartbreak that she experienced in college.

“I really liked someone but that person did not reciprocate my feelings. We ended up having a huge fight when I professed my love for him and then, he stopped talking to me altogether.”

one sided love can be very painful

Few things are as painful as being in a one-sided relationship. Kalsi’s self esteem took a huge hit because of this and this incident took away her happiness. There were a lot of unwanted thoughts in her head which would not let her concentrate on her studies or anything else for that matter.

I had no control over myself, and I knew I was beginning to go crazy because of this whole one sided love situation. I was a huge mess.

She now realises that at the end of the day, no one was truly at fault. But at the time, she had started to expect some things from the man she liked that he could not give her which really affected her state of mind.

Finally, she decided to fight this and connected with YourDOST’s Mr. Naveen Kumar. Naveen helped her rationalise her thoughts and tried to counter her rigid feelings with scientific facts. This really helped Kalsi dig deeper and understand herself better.

“Naveen asked me to start journaling but what truly helped me cope was – time. I gave him as well as myself some time and space and this helped bring a lot of things into perspective.”

She decided to connect with a counselor

Kalsi has seen some major improvements in herself ever since she started going for therapy. Earlier, she could not go a day without talking to the man she liked. But now, it has been a whole month since she last spoke with him which is a huge achievement in her eyes.

It is not that I don’t get the urge to talk to him sometimes, it comes and goes in waves but I now know that I can cope with those thoughts with the help of therapy and my support systems.

We applaud Kalsi for coming forth and seeking help from a professional when she realised she was struggling but there are so many people out there who are still suffering in silence. Kalsi believes that the reason some people don’t open up to others is because they feel like they are the only ones going through it. However, it’s important to take that leap of faith to ultimately realise that there are so many people out there who have been there and have even come out of it stronger.

“I have learnt this – unrequited love can be rough for everyone involved, but things will get better with time. If you’re having a hard time, therapy can always offer a safe, judgment-free space to work through your feelings. In fact, it might turn out to be the best decision of your life.”
