Myths About Sexual Orientation

2 Mins read

IN BRIEF: It is incredibly difficult to shed our prejudices about people’s sexuality and preferences in sexual partners. You know why? Because our society has taught all of us that the moment people deviate from the norm, they are bullied, ridiculed, and harassed. This post is to educate and remind all of us that like everything else in life, sexuality is just a mere choice and not a life threatening masochism.

Sexuality has always been a debatable topic. One that is still considered as abnormal and diseased. With this stuck mindset we are unable to see the reality.

When talking about sexual orientation we are broadly focusing on homosexuals (gays and lesbians); Heterosexuals (attracted towards the opposite gender) and bisexuals (Attracted towards both the genders) here.

We all have our doubts about sexuality and the diverse ideas we get to hear just adds to the confusion. But what amongst all this is really the truth. Lets find out.

Sexuality is a choice, it is caused by something unknown and can be very changing – is one of the myths that we keep hearing about it. But since these are myths none of them are actually true. In fact sexuality is not a choice but is something we are born with and cannot be changed.

It is said to have a strong biological basis hence genes and hormones play a very important role here. Homosexuality or bisexuality isn’t something against the law but have said to be observed not only in humans but in hundreds of different animal species including lions, birds, giraffes, cattle and even penguins which makes this as normal as being straight (heterosexual).

Since sexual orientation is as individual as every human being, one cannot influence the other.

Another most commonly heard myth about homosexuals and bisexual is that they have particular mannerisms and characteristics and tend to behave, dress and act like the opposite gender.

Whereas the fact is they are very comfortable with there own bodies and gender and do not wish to look or dress like the opposite sex.

Having good sex, meeting the right person from the opposite gender, HIV, wrong parenting or childhood sexual abuse has nothing to do with sexuality.

This is a part of the individual and that is how he or she is born and there is nothing abnormal about it. Thus gays and lesbians are as unique and equal any heterosexuals are.

It is a natural phenomenon to get attracted to the other person but one cannot really filter who they are getting attracted to.
